Lesson 4.4 – Editing: A Critical Step For Every Author

Editing is a crucial part of your book’s creation and we’ll talk about why EVERY author ( no exceptions, even for YOU ;)   ) benefits by using an editor.

We’ll also discuss why spelling and grammar checkers cannot take the place of an editor, as well as how to go about finding an editor for your manuscript.

This is where I’m at with this course. It is indeed bringing me into new heights with what I need to know about publishing my books. Yes, some of it is pretty scary, but I’ve also learned something very important that came up just in the last week – tenacity. It is a new word in my vocabulary though I have heard it before. Of course I have heard of many of the implications of tenacity through self-improvement sites, courses, etc. The term says it all. It will be a new chapter in my book! It is a very important concept and is linked to so many other words that help describe it.

A person I had given an earlier copy of my manuscript noted that I should include a chapter on “Endurance.” It confused me but when I found an article on being tenacious, the connection was made as if it were 10,000 volts! The chapter will not be on endurance though there will be something said about it since it is an implication of tenacity.

I would like to express my sadness for the ending of the “Insight2000″ E-zine/Newsletter I subscribed to the newsletter on September 9, 2004 – the day after my 44th birthday. Near the end of September of that year I lost my home due to becoming very ill and henceforth lost my job. Of course one of the grim implications of being employed is the fact that when one is not working, one does not get paid. Gone with my home went my Internet service (AOL at the time,) and my subscription to this wonderful newsletter. Though I did stay on AOL’s free AIM email account, something happened to the subscription. I resubscribed on June 6, 2007.

I was impressed with this newsletter and actually rediscovered John Harricharan through (I believe) Success Unwrapped. If this was not the place, it was Success.net. One or the other, I am grateful for John’s work and down-to-earthness. I’m happy to be part of this course. However, due to making only $135 or so per week at my job (and currently living in sheer poverty,) I will not be able to continue this paid subscription beyond the actual weeks the course runs. I am grateful for John making this course available and affordable for people like myself and consider myself extremely fortunate to be able to attend.

I will say that it’s not what a person has that matters – it’s how he uses what he has! By the way, this includes his mind! (Of course this includes women)

I request to be considered for subscriber status to a new newsletter (if any) mentioned in Issue 40 of Insight2000! I must admit, I am also guilty of not reading every issue but I have gone back sometime in 2007 and retrieved all issues I could from the archive (Issue 16 and every issue I was missing.) I would love to obtain Issues 01-15 if at all possible. Anybody reading this who has them, please email me at euergetes4@gmail.com if you are willing to share them with me. John, if you have them …may I please have them for my archives?

    A happy subscriber.

      Hi Daniel:

I trust all is well and I wish you a wonderful New Year. I am confident that the coming year will be a wonderful one for you. Concerning my newsletter, Insight2000, I have received so very many requests from faithful subscribers who pleaded with me not to discontinue it. I am giving that serious consideration.

Your book will be great. Yes, words such as “Tenacity, Endurance, Perseverance, Persistence” are all very important and they move us to action. Keep on keeping on. Write that book. It will help many.

Have a great journey into the New Year.

      Best regards,

      John

    John,
Will you be giving us a list of editors that you have used or know of personally? Will you or Anita edit or read our manuscripts? When will we be able to get a list of editors? I have written a story about a little star who lives in the heavens and chooses to be born. It is considered a children’s book, but it is for all ages. What kind of editor should I be looking for or does it matter? It would be so wonderful to be able to connect with others in this class. I would love to know if there are other childrens writers out there. Can you connect us up with children’s writers that write with a spritual message. I call them, “The children of the new world”.
    Thank you, bonnie

      Hi Bonnie:

As you noticed, I missed this message also. So sorry. AGAIN!!!

I will deal with many questions (such as the ones you asked) in my Q&A sessions. I’ll also try to connect you with other children’s writers. Your story about a little star sounds wonderful. In the resource section you’ll find suggestions for editors. I think that the easiest thing to do is to have an English High School Teacher, do a quick editing for you. Then put his/her name in the “Special Thanks” or “Acknowledgement” section.

Although my schedule and Anita’s prevent us from editing books these days, I will make an exception and take a quick look at your manuscript as soon as I get a chance — probably after the holidays.

Have a wonderful New Year, Bonnie, and may all good things come your way.

      Best regards,

      John
